In 1992 the administration of Chelyabinsk on the basis of the Folk Theatre of Dance found professional theatre of modern dance "Russian variant" which in 1997 was renamed into "the Chelyabinsk Theatre of Modern Dance". For years of the existence the collective of the theatre has passed a complex career and now has unique style, original repertoir (more than 10 performances).
The theatre is the constant participant of the international festivals and competitions in Russia as well as abroad. Spectators of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Vilnius (Lithuania), Dusseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt (Germany), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Seoul (J.Koreja) warmly accepted actors of the theatre. In France, Germany, Italy, the Great Britain, Norway the theatre represented the country within the framework of Days of culture and art of Russia.
Five times the theatre was the nominee of the National theatrical premium of Russia "Golden Mask", and in 2001 and 2003 became its owner.
There are two choreographers at the theatre - Olga Pona, Vladimir Pona, and 13 dancers, who had received special formation in Academy of arts or College of culture.
The theatre has passed a complex way of becoming and formation of own creative image. The festival movement which had appeared in Russia in the middle of 1990th, participation in foreign festivals and creative contacts to the Russian and foreign choreographers promoted this.
Outstanding figures of the Russian culture and art worked at the theatre and assisted it's becoming:

- Alexander Abubakirovich Muntagirov (Chelyabinsk)
There are also teachers, choreographers from other countries:
- Annet Gano (France, Paris), the teacher on modern dance;
- Be Van Vark (Germany, Berlin), the teacher, the choreographer. Has carried out the performance "Ursonata" at the theatre in 1998, based on the same product of Kurt Shvitters;
- Bronwen McArthur (the USA, New York) the teacher, the choreographer realized the piece "Undersilence" on Daga Henderson's music.
The theatre is grateful for support to Soros Welfare Fund, which helped in 90th years, and to Ford Fund at the present.
The theatre has no own premise. Rehearsal and office premise are rented. Performances in Chelyabinsk are carried out at the Academic theatre of Drama, Theatre of the Young Spectator and other platforms of the city, depending on specificity of performance and available opportunities. The collective has many performances out of city and out of country.
